Week 2: Vocabulary Strategies

Welcome to the new blog! If you are new to blogging, we'll get familiar with it together. If not, you may be able to help your classmates--and me--as we manoeuvre our way around unfamiliar territory!

I enjoyed reading your posts last week on what it means to you to succeed in EAP. This week the topic is vocabulary and how you learn it. Please share with us some of the things you've done to learn new words--both in the classroom or on your own--and tell which of those strategies you feel have been most helpful for you. (Feel free to share those you feel haven't been very successful, too!)

Because of the shortened week and because we are just getting the new blog up and running, your posts are due before midnight on Tuesday, September 13. After that, they will be due before midnight every Tuesday.

If you're having trouble posting, please send me an email and let me know.

  2. Hi everyone! It is Sunny. I am so glad that we have our own blog. This week topic is vocabulary strategies. Honestly, I am real bad at vocabulary, although simple and familiar words for me, I always make mistakes when I use them. One strategy is memorizing new vocabulary, I usually use new vocabulary in my own way and practice many times and then it will become my words. Another strategy of learning vocabulary is reading book and newspaper. When I meet new words, first, I’d like to guess it meaning. I found that sometimes similar meaning words around new word. Secondly, if I couldn’t find any similar meaning words or couldn’t guess the meaning. I will use English to English dictionary to know the meaning. At the same time I learn the synonyms of new words. Finally, if I can’t understand the English definition I have to use dictionary to translate the new words to my mother language. Even though sometimes I found the translation is not appropriate or didn’t make sense. However, it can give idea about the new word definition. That is my strategies about vocabulary. I hope that can help you guys to learn new vocabulary. Meanwhile, I real like to know and learn your strategies.

  3. Hi, this is Hailuo Qin. As far As I concern, I think the most useful way to learn new words is reading. In the reading, there should have lots vocabularies. I always try to infer the meaning of the new words from the context. Most time the sub-fix and prefix would help me to figure out the meaning of the vocabularies. If I can’t understand the word but I can understand the sentence, I will skip the word. Sometime, I will use dictionary to find the definition of the words and take a note of this new word. After a day, I will review this word and try to make a sentence of the word. However, I don’t think it is a good idea. It will slowdown my reading speed. Actually, I don’t think the new word is big trouble to me.

  4. Wow, the comments about how to improve vocabulary skills mentioned above make a lot of difference. As far as i am concerned, I am not good at vocabulary in spite of the fact that i have accumulated over 10,000 news in my notebook. However, I have some methods to share with you. TO begin with, It is generally thought that memorizing the vocabulary is very clumsy way to gain your vocabulary, but sometimes it works very well. For example, the new words collected from the book or some Newspaper can be written in the small card and you can attach it in the wall beside your bed or in front of your desk where you spend a lot of time. So you can see the words before you go to bed, Probably the words will come up in your dream. And the first sight coming into your eyes and mind is amounts of words every morning, so it will bring you a bright and fulfilling day. In return, you will learn it with grateful mind. In addition, what I want to call "Catch the News". Catching up with the latest news is very integral way you should utilize to enforce the vocabulary skill. For example, The very controversial news right now is the affairs in Libya. If you read news every day, it can be clearly seen that many words repeatedly appears in the news. you only need to spend a little more time the first you read it, after that you can recall the vocabulary every day. Besides, It is of great importance to listen to the news and learn how the reporters pronounce the words. So you can be able to spell, recognize and pronounce them. But there is still a question that hasn't been solved, it is how to use it in our life, in our writing. It is very common for our language learners that we can recognize the words but we can't use them in our writing and speaking. So it is essential for us to write a short dialogue or story in which the new vocabulary that has just learnt in the class or has just accumulated is used. And also we should try to recall the vocabulary that you have learnt before you write a academic essay, whether it is in-class or out of class. There are some other ways that you can use to improve the vocabulary skills, but what i reckon most important is the three strategies mentioned above. I can make sure they work on everyone, but i strongly advise you try them.
    Anyway , hopefully, you can achieve the suitable ways to strengthen your English skills, ans i am desperate for your opinions.

  7. Building up new vocabulary is one of the most important ways to develop my English skills. I have used several strategies and liked to share them with my classmates. First, inferring the meanings of the new words from the context is a practical way to learn their diverse definitions. For instance, according to the group words, I can guess what parts of speech they are. Second, using the prefix and suffix is another tactic to expand my new vocabulary. What is more, writing down the tougher ones and looking up the definitions in the dictionary are pretty useful. Of course, memorizing and trying practising them both inside and outside courses are very productive for me as well.

  9. My way of learning new vocabulary is by reading the whole sentence then I try to infer what their meanings are and what parts of speech they are. To memorize, I just rewrite them in a paper several times. For understanding, I sometimes use digital dictionary from internet, to know the meaning of the new words. Also I look at their synonyms and the example sentences which using those words. If the word is strange, I check its pronunciation and mimic it for 2 or 3 times.

    Sometimes, my computer is too slow to log in blackboard so I miss many Things ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    Personally, I dislike Blackboard :(
    too complecated to me!
    I hope I can be familiar with it.

    Anywany, one of my strategies is that I usually study with my friends. Everyday, we decide how many words we will memorise, mostly 50-100 each day. Then, one of us make test paper and we take a test. 50 cents will be deducted for a wrong answer. If you miss 5, you are gonna lose $2.50.
    You will be a legend of vocabulary !
    At the end of every month we have a fabulous dinner with our fine !

  12. Hi everyone,
    Learning new vocabulary, it is a very important and the same a very difficult part of learning a new language. However, some strategies can be used to make this process easier. Here I will try to share some of them. First strategy that I use, is guessing the words meaning from the contest. Although it usually works, many still need more work on. In those cases, I try to use the clues such as looking for what part of speech it is or what words are in relation whit my wonder word. Sometimes, I ask my colleagues or other persons for the meaning or explanation. As an ultimate solution, I use the dictionary to look up for the meaning and synonyms. The hard part is to use those words in sentences and in conversation because I usually tend to use simple vocabulary, in order to be understood by others. These, are some of the methods I use. I hope it will help others in the same way it helps me.
