Music

You read in FOV Chapter 22 that music has been a powerful medium of communication worldwide, but that it really affects each person differently. Some composers have relied on musical instruments to convey their message, while others mix music and lyrics. In some instances the lyrics have been most important especially when they have spoken of people's patriotism or rallied people in times of crisis.

Music can make you sentimental for your homeland and can inspire and bring you joy. Talk about your relationship to music. Are you a musical person? Is there a piece of music that you especially enjoy? Can you share it with us (by link and/or by words)?
Please post your comments by midnight on Tuesday, November 15.

  1. Listening to music is a part of my life despite the fact that I am not good at singing. A piece of good music can be spiritual food which I can derive great pleasure from it. Sometimes it gives me warmness and happiness feelings; or brings me energy; or makes me think about myself; even make me want to cry. My favorite song is “Invisible Wings”. It is a popular song sung by Angela Zhang. I am touched deeply by the great lyrics. For instance:

Every time, I find the will stay strong through the loneliness,
And I will never cry a single tear no matter how much it hurt,
Because I know I have always had a pair of invisible wings,
And they take me flying, flying over despair.--- And they take me flying, giving me hope.
I can finally see the blooming of all my dreams.
Make a wish and just let yourself--- Imagine---

In fact, the song always makes me feel self-confident. I really rally to deal with each obstacle I face.

I believe that everyone has a pair of invisible wings!

  2. When I was in Junior high school till High School, I always listened to music while I did my homework or before falling asleep. At that time, my relationship with music was very close since I’m good at singing too. However, when I entered University till now, I hardy ever listen to music, maybe because I don’t have enough time. A patriotic song will make us motivated to continue with our lives. And if a cheerless person listens to a sad song, it will increase their sadness. So I think that it’s not good to listen to too much sad songs. And it’s better to listen to motivating and cheering songs.

My favorite English song is “Tell Me Why” by Declan Galbraith. It’s a nice song, with simple lyrics. I and my children like this song, so here’s the link and I hope you like it too.

  3. Here is a question that I used to be asked “what will you bring with you if you’re stranded alone in an island?” I’m sure that I’m not Robinson, but as long as I have water and food, I think I will survive. But living alone is not just about water and food; the most difficult thing is that you will get nobody to talk. My answer will be music. Music is powerful and has physical and mental effects on us. Music is one of three important things of my life. The other two are my family and health. I like different kinds of music. Some can calm me down; some can wake me up; some can bring me happiness; some can remind me old friends. There is a piece of Chinese folk music I especially like recently which the name in English is “there are excessive flowers on the other shore of sea, here only get weeds bushes”, this piece of music was played by Chinese bamboo flute and piano. I can feel the music like a warm hand touched my heart when every time I listened to this music.

  4. Music has been with me for many years. When I was a kid, I was ever frustrated by the twitter from birds every morning late treated it as a kind of rhythm; in summer evening, I often fell asleep with a variety of sounds from to my the field, rivers, there were calls of frog, insects, and other creatures. I did not realize how sweet the natural sounds were until I moved to the town surrounded by automobile whistle and yelling of people. I started stepping into another kind of music which is generally considered real music. Because there were no advanced technology to download music, I bought a lot of tapes of many Chinese 90's stars, I was into the music so that I brought my mini recorder everywhere, even classroom. At that time, I made a lot of friends, we exchanged our tapes, we sang the songs in the class, we made great lyrics notebook in which we collected various songs. Today, I listen to the music when I undertake assignments, read books, and even do exercise. Light music brought me quietness when I am blundering, rock music energize me when I am tired, lyric music reminds me of my friends and relatives, and patriotic music made me full of energy and enthusiasm to work harder to reward home country. Every time I sing Chinese national song, I feel very proud and inspired, its lyrics describe how splendid the Chinese history is, how many obstacles China has overcome, and how hard the people in Second World war were. Music can be a spirit of a custom, a country and a person, music can be a career that people pursue, music also can be a medicine curing people of mental diseases.

I love a Chinese band named BEYOND, here is a link to their music:http://mp3.baidu.com/singerlist/beyond.html

  5. In my life, music is very important to me. When I am tired, I get relaxed from listening to music. When I feel happy, music echoes my spirit and excites me greatly. I think music is one of the most wonderful miracles in the word, I can't live without music. There are many kinds of music such as classical music, light music, popular music, hip-hop music and rock music. I like all kinds of music, music can relieve my pressure. Everyday I use C-train to go to school. I always keep my headphone in my ear and listening to music. When I am listening to music, I can think of nothing but enjoying the music. Also sometimes I use the music to provoke my emotions. Rock music can make me feel dance, light music puts me into deep thinking and pure my spirit and also it can make me forget the fatigue and troubles. In addition, the song "The Greatest Love of all" sang by Whitney Houston always played in my mind. Simply because it creates a good sense of feeling. It boosts my confidence and care to other people especially with children. This reminds me my younger years how does my family supported me in everything I do. Listening to my favorite music in my free time is the happiest thing to me.

  6. I do not enjoy listening to music. when I listen to it, it makes me distracted so I cannot focus on study, reading books and doing something. Some people cannot live without music. One of my friends recommanded a application that smartphone users downlaod and can listen to music, named Sky FM Radio. Sometimes, I use this application to listen to music. My favorite music is Jass. Jass does not have any rules so I just enjoy. I do not need to think of Jass's history or background. I like cafe that somebody is playing piano and musical instruments in Jazz style and atmosphere is dark, as well I can drink a cup of good coffee. If you have a smartphone, try to download the application I mentioned.

  7. I like to listen to music when I have time to kill. However, I don’t have enough time to listen to my favourite music, which is Classic music and rock and roll. This music is so different that you can believe both of them are my favourite. Actually, I listened to them in different situation. When I am in good mood, I would like to listen to Classic music. It can make happy. When I am in a bad mood, I would like to enjoy rock and roll. I don’t think I have some great music to share, but I can share some very impressive experience. When I was in LINC five in YMCA, My teacher let us enjoy a lot of song about the Remembrance Day. The song is awesome. Most of my classmate cannot control the feeling. Tears rolled down their faces. I regretted that I did remember the title of the song, but we can search on YouTube.

  8. I like music, even if I can’t sing at loud the same way I do in my head :) I’m definitely not a singer. My love to music starts in high school and it flourished in the time I was studding in the university. I used to listen to the music during those long nights of drawing or before the exams, when everybody else in the room was sleeping. In moments like that, I just turn on the radio on Radio 7, 105.2 FM and listen to radio all night long. Usually, radio was on for days. Now, I’m listen to the music no as often as then, but I enjoy it every time. We listen occasionally to our traditional music that I would like that my children will still understand, as well to the good international music. I like classic, jazz, rock, folk and all good music, old hits and new songs. I just do not like commercial music, the one that it written just to make money.

Below are some links to some of my favourite compositions.
They were my favourites long before I could understand English, now they have even more special meaning for me. I hope you will enjoy them!

  9. I am not a good music listener. People of my county used to listen music. Local folk music is a part of our farmer lives. We love love as well as soul searcing song. In case national festval, we listen patriotic songs. This music played a great role to inspire freedom fighters to leberate our country during the civil war with Pakistan. Our popular music is mainly mixed with lyrics and local musical instrument. We are now intrducing different western musical instrumenets also. Now our music industry is devastated by boollywood music. Educated young people very much acquinted with the English popular song. After coming in Canada, my daughter and me used to listen a music which always touch my heart. The lyric might be- Go bird and tell her she will not forget me. This is one the popular song in my country. It acts in both way; love as well as patriotism. Now, I sometime listen english music with my wife and daughter. My wife is a good english music listener from her childhood.

  10. Music, which is entertained and brings many joys, is one important thing in my life. I like singing songs in karaoke with friends. I like listening music when I take bus or train. When I was young, I played keyboard which I learned it since I was very little. However, I think this experience might be an embarrassing memory for me. Like most Chinese parents, my mom sent me to a keyboard class when I was 3. Actually, I don’t have clear memory about this experience but according to my mom’ talking that I rejected to go to the keyboard class by blubbering in front of the classroom. So my mom quit to take to the keyboard class and now I just can play keyboard in one hand. Recently, I listen some funny songs which are sung and written by Bruno Mars, such as, “Just the Way You Are”, “Marry You” and “The Lazy Song”. These songs have funny lyrics and nice composition. In addition, these songs you can find in YouTube. Enjoy them!

  11. Hello everybody! I was trying from my home to send this post many times yesterday evening, but it didn't work. This time I try from BVC.
The topic is about music. When I was in Grade one my parents purchased a piano and I started my study in musical school in the afternoon time. My grandfather was a good pianist. He never goes to a music school, but he could understand how to play by himself. My father used to go to musical school and he also was a good pianist. As for me, first two-three years of my study in the musical school I really didn't enjoy it. My parents just force me to go, because just for a good habits. Actually in my country the music school study continues seven years. When I was in grade five in the musical school, I started understand that the music slowly came to my heart. My daughter also completed three years of musical study and wanted continues in Canada too, but we didn’t buy a piano yet. I can advice you my favorite classical music 1. It’s Mozart, Symphony #40, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y57AWXLMpGU&feature=related; 2. Beethoven, Symphony #9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAOTCtW9v0M&feature=related; 3. Mozart Requiem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi8vJ_lMxQI&feature=related; and my most favored Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven, which I’d like to play for relaxation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck&feature=related
